What Roles do Decarbonisers play in Society?

An insight into how green technicians help the planet now and in the future

In an era where climate change is a pressing global concern, the need for cross sectoral knowledge becomes more important. As industries and individuals seek ways to reduce their carbon footprints, one group of professionals is emerging as the go-betweens within the nexus of food, energy and water: Green Technicians.

What Are Green Technicians?

Green Technicians, sometime referred to as Environmental Technicians, Sustainability Specialists or even Decarbonisers, are individuals trained to implement eco-friendly practices and technologies across various industries and sectors. They play a pivotal role in helping businesses and communities transition to more sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

One of the primary goals of these specialists is to reduce carbon footprints. Here are some areas of the economy where they are doing it:

  1. Energy Efficiency Audits: These audits identify areas where energy is being wasted and recommend solutions to reduce consumption. By optimizing energy use, carbon emissions are significantly reduced.
  2. Renewable Energy Integration: The shift toward renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power is a key focus for Green Technicians. They assist in the installation and maintenance of renewable energy systems, allowing communities and businesses to generate clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  3. Waste Reduction and Recycling Programs: By diverting waste from landfills and promoting recycling, they prevent the emission of greenhouse gases associated with waste decomposition.
  4. Transportation Sustainability: They work with transportation companies and municipalities to promote sustainable transportation options such as electric vehicles (EVs) and public transit systems. This reduces the carbon emissions associated with traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
  5. Sustainable Agriculture: In the agricultural sector, they support the adoption of sustainable farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This includes techniques like no-till farming and crop rotation, which sequester carbon in the soil.
  6. Water Conservation: Here they promote water conservation through the installation of water-saving technologies and the implementation of water-efficient practices. Reducing water consumption indirectly lowers the energy required for water treatment and transportation.
  7. Sustainable Building Practices: In the construction industry, Green Technicians encourage the use of sustainable building materials and energy-efficient designs. This results in buildings with lower energy demands and reduced emissions throughout their lifecycle.

What About the Future?

In the not-so-distant future, a new wave of green skills could become more relevant. For example Eco-AI Specialists, who can help harness artificial intelligence to optimize resource utilization, minimize waste, and streamline sustainable practices. greentech.training is already doing this as part of our Global Green Leader program, where we help prepare Green AI-trainers and data scientists specialised at nature care and biodiversity.

Carbon Capture Technicians will also be required to help master advanced techniques, systems and process that efficiently sequester and repurpose carbon emissions while mitigating the impacts of industrial processes. It is in this field that Circular Economists could also help pioneer innovative business models focused on closing the loop of production and consumption, ensuring materials are reused and repurposed in a regenerative manner.

And Societal Engineering?

This is an emerging discipline now forming to aid communities who will soon, if they have not already, begin to experience the impacts of climate change and the societal alterations these bring about. Societal engineers will generally be attached to governments, but can also act as consultants, and will be tasked to understand how evolutionary biology, anthropology, history, ethics, international law and Adaptive Capacity (the ability of a social-ecological system to adjust its functioning to respond to changes or disturbances) can help communities adopt new practices to cope with climate change impacts.

These emerging green skills represent a collective commitment to a better coexistence with our planet–an area where greentech.training is pleased to play a role.
